This may be a bit weird but certainly realistic approach to the subject of time perception.
Time, although measured in a linear way is often perceived as non linear - sometimes a person feels the time goes slower, faster, also may experience missing time or absence of time. For me this phenomena is well visible when we analyze the neurochemical structure of the brain. Because of lack of methods to measure mental energy circuits (officially) the best way in this case is to look at the action of neurotransmitters and their role, what should be not understood as a strict cause of time perception, more like a place of resonance. So... how to measure this neural action anyway ? My examples will be based on certain substances that affect the time perception such as hallucinogens, dissociatives, deliriants and depressants.
First of all, the conclusion that these substances are artificial for the body is nonsense as most of them are produced by human body (endogenously), some of them are imprinted in the DNA for synthesis and some are having endoproduced equivalents.
Second thing is that by describing this in this way I don't say that some experiences are real or not, this text should be treated as looking for the "footprints of God on Earth".
Ok, to the point. Time fluctuations often occur along with certain emotional states, such as a pleasant chat with a friend, a boring lecture, alpha and theta states connected to channelings and astral projections. Situations affecting us from outside must resonate with inside and vice versa because without resonance there would be no transmission. Signals are decoded into electrochemical signals allowing the mind to communicate with the world. Neurotransmitters are mediators of all these signals so by their modulation we can alter perception of time, that is nothing more than world's animation frequency. Like in computers we can change the time-speed in the game 4 ex. by changing the frequencies of computers body (cpu, ram etc.) and mind (software). When a person is dreaming, (theoretically) in order to project images, brain (pineal gland) produces endohallucinogens.
"There is at least one harmala alkaloid found in the pineal gland of both humans and several animals. According to some reports, this compound is more abundant in the pineal glands of highly advanced yogis. This has led to speculation that it's presence may impart power to the "third eye" in mid-forehead where the pineal gland lies. (Stafford, 1993)". sulcus.berkeley.edu/mcb/165_001/papers/manuscripts/_632.html
Mostly this substance is 10-methoxy-harmaline, that is also found in the plant kingdom and in a sacred Indian brew 'ayahuasca'. Many users experience feelings that closely resemble close encounters with cosmic beings and the alteration of time also.
From my personal experiences with another sacred plant salvia divinorum (non alkaloid plant, active ingredient Salvinorin A is a terpenoid) I also find some clues about fluctuating time. Experience lasts about 30 min but this is strictly subjective matter as the one 'shot into space' gets so much information that would respond to thousands of earth's years. Salvinorin A responds to kappa opioid receptors that are connected with emotional states such as pleasure and pain relief, although no one thought that these receptors would also behave in this way (psychedelic/entheogenic).
Other substances that affect the time perception are certain serotonin analogs - ex. psylocybin/psylocin, tryptamines (N,N-DMT), LSA, LSD, and others.* (See also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptamine for other similar ones.)
What should be reported also is when there is a time perception alteration there is often space alteration also. While having a pleasant talk, one notices mostly this what is in the nearest distance (range of little bonfire at night). This also happens to marijuana users along with time/space alterations, concentration on here and now and other subjective effects.
I was also heard that when there was a revelation of St. Mary and she (or Jesus) was seen by groups of people, a violet scent was felt. My suggestion is that the smell comes from disintegration of tryptamine analogues (hallucinogenic) forming skatole (3-methylindole). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skatole
* There is a controversy regarding the role of serotonin receptors and I have not seen any serious research about it. In Alexander Shulgin's research, one LSD analogue lacks psychedelic effect although being a potent serotonin antagonist (codename BOL-148).
