A Linking book is a special book which has a panel on the right side of usually the first or second page of the book. The panel is either a picture or a moving picture. Upon touching the panel, the person who has the book will be transported to the Age shown in the picture. A common misperception is that a linking book is the same as a Descriptive Book, but that is not the case.

A very common mistake is that a linking book is the same as a descriptive book. However, they are not. A linking book cannot be created until a descriptive book is written. A descriptive book is an initial link to an age, written with The Art that establishes a link to that particular age. These books are much harder to write and must be accurately described or the writer risks linking to an unstable age. Once a descriptive book is created and linked to, a writer can create a separate linking book back to that age, which is much smaller and more portable. However, the linking book must be created within that age.

You and all of your clothing, equipment, etc. comes with you. However, with the exception of Yeesha's Relto book, the book remains behind when you link, a fact which has been used to trap people time and time again. Saavedro was trapped on J'nanin when Sirrus and Achenar linked out while holding the linking book directly above a fire.
